The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has released a
position statement on the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Housing Design Catalogue initiative. While recognizing the importance of addressing the housing crisis through efficient solutions, RAIC has emphasized the need for architectural excellence, design adaptability, and sustainability in all housing strategies.
The RAIC has also raised concerns about the risks of a “one-size-fits-all” approach, noting that standardized templates may overlook such critical factors as local climate, cultural context, and long-term durability. The Institute has advocated for a housing design framework that is flexible and responsive to regional and community-specific conditions, with recommendations including the integration of energy-efficient materials, fostering innovative design, and ensuring housing solutions are adaptable to local needs.
RAIC has called for a collaborative approach involving architects and other stakeholders to shape a national housing strategy that balances affordability with quality and sustainability. The organization has reiterated its commitment to working with federal ministries and CMHC to create housing that meets the highest standards of design excellence and community well-being.
