OAA Council: Highlights From May 2025 and Looking to the June Meeting

The OAA’s governing Council met in Ottawa on May 13 to discuss various items related to the Association and the architecture profession in the context of regulating for the public interest. Held in the leadup to the Conference, the group reviewed the financial statements from the first three months of the fiscal year (which began in December 2024), as well as a summary on a recent meeting of the Regulatory Organizations of Architecture in Canada (ROAC).

Councillors received reports from the President, Registrar, and Executive Director, as well as the Communications & Public Education Committee (CPEC), the Governance & HR Committee, the OAA Building Committee, and the Practice Resource Committee (PRC).

As mentioned in the May 2025 edition of the Practice Advisory newsletter, Council approved Practice Tip PT.04, Building Code–Project Code Review, which has now undergone a name change and some updates, as well as Practice Tip PT.7, Professional Opinion–Independent Option–Reviewing a Project Prepared by Another Holder. Further, Council agreed to endorse the revised OAA Practice Tip PT. 15, Consulting Contracts, Managing Changes, Scope Creep, subject to slight amendments. These will be shared shortly.

Immediately following the Council meeting, those Councillors who also serve as liaisons to the Local Architectural Societies participated in an annual in-person session with those chairs. Led by OAA President Ted Wilson and Association staff, it explored important topics such as community engagement, scalable approaches to success, and identifying common challenges across Ontario.

Next meeting

As always, the OAA publicly posts Council agenda and meeting information packages on the OAA Website. Anyone interested in virtually attending an open session can contact Tina Carfa for the link and additional information. The next meeting takes place in Toronto at the OAA Headquarters on June 19. For Councillors in attendance, there will also be a special luncheon with invited guests to celebrate the unveiling of the Association’s new wall plaque installation commemorating Past Presidents.
