On February 20, the OAA held its annual Jury Day, which architects and experts from across Ontario and beyond gathered at the Association’s Toronto Headquarters.
Working with facilitator (and OAA Past-President) Sean O’Reilly and sustainability advisor Karl van Es, the Design Excellence Jury explored 100 submissions to come up with a shortlist of 20 Finalists, who will be announced later this month. The Design Excellence Jury comprised architects Luc Jean-Paul Bouliane, Joy Charbonneau, and Kfir Gluzberg, as well as John Brown (dean of the School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape at the University of Calgary) and Canadian Architect editor Elsa Lam. These individuals were responsible for selecting the best in recent work by Ontario architects; in addition to the Finalists, they also chose the ultimate 10 Winners, as well as recipients of the Michael V. and Wanda Plachta Award and Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Design Excellence in Architecture. These projects and the teams behind them will be showcased as part of the Celebration of Excellence at the OAA Conference in Niagara Falls this May.

Also making decisions that day was the Service Awards Jury. Facilitator Jane Burgess led the group, comprising fellow architects Suzanne Stiers, Naama Blonder, Toronto Society of Architects (TSA) Executive Director Joël León and OAA President Settimo Vilardi. They selected this year’s Best Emerging Practice, additions to the Honour Roll, and winners of Lifetime Design Excellence and the Medal of Service. These individuals will be revealed in April in the run up to the Conference.
