2024 OAA Award Juries

The OAA is excited to announce its two panels of jurors for its 2024 Awards season, and their jury facilitators. Read on to learn more about these individuals who will be coming together in February at the OAA Headquarters in Toronto to review the submissions and make their selections.

Design Excellence

 

Luc Jean-Paul Bouliane  

ARCHITECT, LEBEL & BOULIANE INC.

Luc Bouliane is a design-focused and technically skilled architect with a diverse and well-recognized portfolio. He graduated from the University of Waterloo and co-founded Lebel & Bouliane in 2010, a Toronto-based firm known for its award-winning cultural, commercial, interior, and residential projects. Luc is currently involved in numerous ventures, including the design of a museum in Nova Scotia, a new Toronto Public Library branch, a tech office HQ in NYC, and a custom home build in Toronto’s Bridal Path neighbourhood.

Luc has received numerous honours for his design excellence, including the RAIC’s Young Architect Award, recognition from the OAA and the Ontario Library Association, a Tucker Design Award in the U.S., and an Architectural Conservancy of Ontario for his adaptive re-use work. He has also served as a guest lecturer at the University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, OCADU, and the University of Sidney (AUS).
 

 


Joy Charbonneau

DESIGNER DIRECTOR, SENIOR ASSOCIATE, GENSLER

With nearly 20 years of experience designing award-winning corporate workplace interiors, building repositioning, and higher education projects, Joy has built a reputation for dynamic and modern architecture and interiors.

Trusted by her clients to deliver a combination of exceptional architectural design talent, and a refined technical ability to solve challenges, Joy is also considered a vital contributor and promotor of Canadian art and design.

In 2010, Joy co-founded the Toronto Design Offsite Festival—now one of Ontario’s largest cultural celebrations of design. Five years later, she co-founded Building Equality in Architecture in Toronto (BEAT).



Dr. John Brown 

PROFESSOR, DEAN OF THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE & PLANNING AND LANDSCAPE, UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY

John Brown, PhD, is Professor Architecture and Dean of the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape at the University of Calgary. He is a registered architect in Alberta, Immediate Past President of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and a founding partner of the residential design/build company Housebrand, as well as Garden Loft, a start-up venture exploring new forms of senior’s housing. His work has been published internationally and been recognized with an RAIC Award of Excellence for Innovation, Prairie Design Award, Residential Architect Leadership Award, two Mayor’s Urban Design Awards, and the City of Calgary Accessibility Award. 




Kfir Gluzberg 

ARCHITECT,  KILOGRAM INC. 

Kfir Gluzberg is an architect, advocate, and instructor. His practice focuses on: experimentation with materials and the narratives embodied in our spaces. Kilogram has designed more than 20 retail locations for Greenhouse, other commercial, residential and planning projects. Kilogram’s projects have garnered awards and recognition, including the 2023 Best of Canada Retail by Canadian Interiors, and Glimmer House, which was featured in Dwell, Grand Designs, and Designlines Magazines. Advocacy for heritage preservation and 2SLGBTQ+ seniors' housing, through the Toronto Society of Architects, are also integral parts of the practice. Together, these skill sets have been used while instructing at TMU Interior Design and UofT Daniels School of Architecture. 


Dr. Elsa Lam

EDITOR, CANADIAN ARCHITECT

Elsa Lam, FRAIC, Hon. OAA, PhD is editor of Canadian Architect magazine. She holds a doctorate in architectural history and theory from Columbia University, completed under the supervision of Kenneth Frampton and Vittoria di Palma. She previously studied architectural history at McGill University and architectural design at the University of Waterloo.

Elsa is the co-editor of the book Canadian Modern Architecture, 1967 to the present (Princeton Architectural Press and Canadian Architect, 2019). She has taught architectural writing at the University of Waterloo and at Toronto Metropolitan University, and has worked in the curatorial and research departments at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal.

Elsa’s volunteering includes current roles as Vice Chair of the Advisory Committee for Building Equality in Architecture Toronto (BEAT), and as Co-Chair of the RAIC’s Awards Advisory Committee.




Sean O'Reilly

JURY FACILITATOR

PRINCIPAL, 3STONES ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN

Sean O'Reilly is the founder and principal of 3stones architecture + design located outside Barrie. He is Past President of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA), Past Senior Vice President and Treasurer of the OAA and a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). Sean has also worked on the national committee to develop the Canadian National Architectural Licensing Exam (ExAC) and chaired the national management committee CExAC after the exam was launched. He continues to be an active contributor to the exam.

During his more than 35 years of architectural practice, Sean has collaborated with some of Canada's most accomplished architectural firms and designers, contributing to numerous projects. His current practice serves a diverse clientele spanning public, institutional, cultural, commercial, retail, and residential sectors, both large and small. Throughout his career, Sean’s focus has prioritized design excellence, integrating a building's design with the natural environment through biophilic design and environmentally responsible construction solutions.

Settimo Vilardi  

PRESIDENT  

Settimo Vilardi, OAA, M.Arch, BFA, FRAIC, is President of the governing Council of the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA), which regulates the province’s architecture profession to protect the public interest. A Windsor-based architect with more than 20 years of experience in residential, institutional, commercial, and civic projects, he is co-owning principal of Archon Architects Incorporated. Through his formal education in fine arts (University of Windsor) and architecture (University of Toronto), he developed a balanced approach to design that draws from theoretical and practical foundations to yield creative, functional, and thoughtful solutions.

Vilardi takes projects from procurement and preliminary design through to construction documents and completion. His skills range from interior and architectural design, 3D modelling, and construction drawings to project management/administration. Vilardi developed his practice’s in-house sustainable design analysis for a client-focused approach to reduce lifecycle costs while engaging in climate action. 

A Fellow of the RAIC  and past chair of the Windsor Region Society of Architects, Vilardi is outspoken about the need for better education among architects in determining fair and reasonable fees, and is a lecturer for the OAA’s Fundamentals of Running an Architectural Practice Course.




Naama Blonder

ARCHITECT,  URBAN DESIGNER, URBAN PLANNER, SMART DENSITY  

Naama is an architect, urban designer and planner. Her professional practice combines the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, and urban design to bring a deeper, more realistic understanding of how cities can address housing affordability and champion inclusive neighbourhoods with more equitable access to housing.

Her work has earned multiple awards, including the prestigious Best Emerging Practice Award from the Ontario Association of Architects in 2022, as well as the SHIFT Challenge award in 2019, 2021 and 2023.




Joël León 

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TORONTO SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS

Joël León Danis, OAA, MRAIC is an architect, researcher, and community builder whose career has been shaped by a strong interest in public policy, placemaking, and the critical dialogue between the architectural profession and the public. With a belief that everyone should be involved in shaping their built environment, his work actively strives to remove barriers of participation, engaging users and the public throughout the design process in a meaningful and empathetic way. Never one to shy away from an intriguing/interesting opportunity, Joël’s portfolio encompasses a wide variety of residential projects, including renovations, additions and new builds, as well as institutional and commercial retrofits. His body of work also includes dozens of articles, exhibitions, tours, and other unconventional publication formats, all aimed at making architectural discussions accessible to everyone.

Currently, Joel holds the position of Executive Director for the Toronto Society of Architect, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of architecture in the Greater Toronto Area. During his tenure at the TSA, he has championed the development of new initiatives and programs, and the modernization of administrative systems to accommodate the Society's growing membership and reach. In addition to this role, Joël is the co-founder of Make Good Projects, a Toronto-based architecture and story-telling practice committed to building a better city.




Suzanne Stiers 

ARCHITECT, ARCHON ARCHITECTS INCORPORATED
& CHAIR, WINDSOR REGION SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTS


Suzanne Stiers is an architect at Archon Architects Incorporated, a well-established firm located in Windsor, Ontario. With more than 25 years of architectural experience, she applies her extensive experience to a variety of commercial, institutional, residential, industrial, and civic projects.

Additionally, Suzanne serves as the current Executive Chair of the Windsor Region Society of Architects (WRSA), which works to enhance the public’s awareness, understanding, and appreciation of the architectural profession.

Suzanne received a Master of Architecture degree with distinction from Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan. She also occasionally serves as a juror and committee member at the post-secondary level.




Jane Burgess  

JURY FACILITATOR


PARTNER, STEVENS BURGESS ARCHITECTS LTD. 

Jane Burgess, OAA, MRAIC, CAHP, APT, is a founding partner of SBA (Stevens Burgess Architects Ltd.) and has practised architecture primarily within the heritage industry for four decades. Her projects have been the recipient of a number of prestigious awards, including both the Heritage Toronto and Heritage Canada Design Awards. She has lectured widely on conservation matters and contributed to heritage policy making and advocacy. She has served as vice chair of the Toronto Preservation Board and has previously been a vice president of the OAA. Jane’s dedication extends to mentoring the next generations of conservation architects.
