Vagn Houlbjerg, Life Member
1933—March 21, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that Jutta, beloved wife, announces the passing of her husband and best friend, architect Vagn Houlbjerg. Vagn, at 92 yrs old, left us peacefully on March 21, 2025.
Born in Denmark, Vagn began his architectural journey training at Horsens' School of Architectural Technology. Deciding to move to Canada in 1957 with his soon to be wife Jutta, they began a 67-year adventure together. Starting their life in Calgary, Vagn soon decided he wanted to complete his architecture education, and so they moved to Vancouver, where he studied at the University of British Columbia.
Upon graduation, Vagn began working full-time with Arthur Erickson on Arthur's well-known residential projects. After a few years, Vagn was appointed by Arthur as the project lead for the Canadian Government Pavilion at EXPO 70 in Japan. Vagn and Jutta packed their bags and moved to Japan.
After 15 years of working with Arthur on many projects in Canada, Japan and the US, Vagn decided to explore new avenues and eventually joined the team at Bregman and Hamann, where he worked along with Moshe Safdie on the Ballet Opera House and later, on the redevelopment of Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Vagn and Jutta's adventures took them around the world, living in Holland, The European Space Research Technology Center, Japan, Copenhagen, Seattle and Boston, as well as Vancouver and Calgary. They eventually settled in Toronto; a place they've called home for 40yrs. Their life together is reflected in their art collection, lasting friendships and many memories.
Vagn will be greatly missed for his forward thinking, creative mind and unique outlook on life. In lieu of flowers or donation Vagn would want to be remembered for his work, in which he was very proud.
