Expanding Housing Options in the City of Toronto

The Garden Suites bylaw is now in full force in the City of Toronto after the Ontario Land Tribunal turned down an appeal of the bylaw.  Across Toronto, garden suite proposals that are compliant with the bylaw are required to apply for a building permit. Once the permit is received, projects can proceed. For those projects not compliant with the bylaw, an application can be made for a minor variance via the Committee of Adjustment. Ontario continues to face a significant housing affordability crisis. The OAA applauds the City of Toronto for its work on expanding housing options and continues to work alongside government to advance work that addresses this affordability crisis. Garden suites and other forms of housing being considered as part of the City’s Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods (EHON) program are intended to allow for the creation of housing forms that create a better, more equitable, and more resilient city for current and future residents.
