Celebrate the launch of “Engaging Black People and Power”

On Monday, March 22, 2021, join York University and Canadian Urban Institute to celebrate the launch of Jay Pitter’s "Engaging Black People and Power" publication, a resource that highlights engagement practice and policy approaches for addressing spatialized anti-Blackness in cities.

Created by placemaker and author Jay Pitter in collaboration with students and scholars in York University’s Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, this publication highlights engagement practice and policy approaches for addressing spatialized anti-Blackness in cities across North America. The publication and related graduate course were spurred by the public execution of George Floyd, and draws on the seminal scholarship and ancestral example of W.E.B. Du Bois. It features ten case studies, policy expert roundtable discussion highlights, practical templates and recommendations.

This powerful resource provides urbanists, community organizations, scholars, students and policy experts with insights that transform recent and long-standing conversations toward action.

The event will feature a fireside chat between Jay Pitter and Minneapolis-based Metropolitan Parks and Open Space commissioner and cycling advocate Anthony Taylor; New York City Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver; a moment of silence for Charlotte-based pastor and Black urbanist Darryl Gaston, and a special playlist curated by Toronto-based urban planner and music enthusiast Sam Carter-Shamai.

Opening remarks will be delivered by Adam Vaughan (Spadina-Fort York MP and Parliamentary Secretary for Housing).

This project is a result of deep collaboration from people and sites across North America. It has been partially funded by United Way Toronto and the Toronto Foundation, two organizations from Jay’s home city committed to equitable urbanism.
