Reframing "The Project": Project Management and Operational Management in The Design Endeavour

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Session Abstract:
Sometimes, when architects talk about "The Project" they mean the client's building construction. Sometimes they mean the design commission. Sometimes they mean the design and construction. Inconsistency in the use of the term "The Project" leads to a lack of clarity in responsibilities and management approaches.

The Canadian Handbook of Practice for Architects 3rd Edition reframes the term "project" and introduces the broadly accepted term "program" to describe the combination of project(s) and operation(s) that constitute the design endeavour. Distinguishing between activities of architectural practice that are project-based from operation-based is not just a semantic exercise. Clarity in the characteristics of practice activities can leads to clearer boundaries of responsibility, and more efficient and effective management approaches across the design project life cycle, and construction contract administration and general review operations.

Learning Outcomes:
•  Examine their current project management approach to the work of the design endeavour to identify inefficiencies;
•  Differentiate responsibilities for the design program from those of the construction program;
•  Consider how an operational management approach to construction contract administration and general review would be more efficient than a project management approach;
•  Consider how statistical quality metrics could be applied to construction contract administration and general review.
