Communicating the Value of Design in Architecture

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Session Abstract:
It is one thing to be a proponent of climate responsible design, but how do we make this case for clients? As architecture professionals, we are trained in the craft of architecture, but never formally taught how to explain our value in the way that clients understand. As a result, there is often misalignment between a client’s expectation of fees and what firms require to produce high-quality work. When value is not captured by a design firm, firms are forced to produce the same level of quality for less compensation.

Learning Outcomes:
• Attendees will be able to summarize the importance of effectively communicating the value of architectural services to clients.
• Attendees will be able to list strategies to align client expectations with the fees required to produce high-quality, climate responsible architectural work.
• Attendees will learn new ways to articulate the unique value architects bring to projects.
• Attendees will learn how to apply principles from behavioral economics research to optimize the capture of value for design work.

About the speaker:
Enoch Bartlett Sears, AIA, passionately believes that architects shouldn't compromise their health, relationships, or finances for the love of their work. With a decade of experience in the architectural realm, Enoch initiated the "Business of Architecture" podcast in 2012, aiming to unearth the secrets of successfully managing a small architectural firm. Throughout the next ten years, he invested over $4.7 million to perfect the SMART Practice Method®, an innovative approach that offers architects both creative satisfaction and financial gain without the usual turmoil. To date, over 253 architectural firm owners worldwide have successfully completed the SMART Practice program under the Business of Architecture's guidance. Enoch is an alumnus of Cornell University's College of Architecture, Art, and Planning. Dive deeper into his insights by joining the multitude who regularly tune into the weekly "Business of Architecture" podcast.
