Session Abstract:
Design decisions are routinely made based on the value they bring to the Client. Economic costs – both upfront investments and ongoing operating costs are easily evaluated. Similarly, in the face of the Climate crisis, we must take into account the cost in carbon emissions – both upfront and ongoing – of our design decisions.
Recent advances in the science of carbon accounting and widely available modelling tools can be used to quantify both embodied and operational carbon allowing Owners and Architects to make more informed decisions to drive our building designs towards zero carbon and beyond. Through case studies of real world design problems, we will illustrate the ways such tools can be used to inform decisions and avoid carbon-costly mistakes.
A discussion of appropriate metrics and targets to guide our work towards both a Net-Zero Energy and a true Zero-Carbon 2050.
This presentation builds on the foundation of the 2022 OAA Conference presentation that outlined the theoretical background for this work. We now have the modelling tools and case studies to explore in real-world terms how we can include carbon in our decision making during the design stage.
Learning Outcomes:
• Acquire the tools to address client concerns about the cost of no/low carbon design.
• Learn, from real world examples, the key steps to no/low carbon design.
• Gain an understanding of the relative impact of upfront (embodied) versus operating (emitted) carbon together with proven cost-effective strategies to reduce both.
• Understand the true costs and payback periods for a range of low-rise 'green' building strategies.
About the Speakers:
Daniel Hall, OAA LEED AP
A licensed Carpenter and Architect, Daniel’s career has focused on the intersection of sustainable design and affordable, scalable construction techniques. He currently leads the design team of Collaborative Architecture on a range of low / no carbon building projects that address the urgent need for shelter at a variety of scales from Backyard Housing to MURB affordable housing projects. Daniel has presented at the OAA Conference, Passive Building Canada BOG Toronto Metropolitan University, and the University of Toronto / OAA FRAP course.
Ana Gascon Marco, OAA CPHD
Ana is a licenced architect in Spain and Ontario, and a Certified Passive House Designer (CPHD). Ana has been involved in a wide range of projects including multi-unit and single residential buildings, commercial, institutional, and interior commercial fit-out projects. Her focus now is on low-carbon multi-unit residential buildings retrofits. Ana has presented for Passive House Canada BOG and Sustainable Waterloo Region. She is active on the boards of the Grand Valley Society of Architects (Chair) and the Ontario Natural Building Coalition (Board member) Ana recently led the team that won the City of Kitchener ‘Backyard Homes’ design competition.
Kim Degenkolb, B.Arch
Kim is a German-born designer and problem-solver with a passion for environmentally responsible design. Having grown up in Germany, Kim has been exposed to both North American and European Architecture education and practice. As a recent graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Architectural Science Co-op program, she has gained a great amount of knowledge in building science and low-carbon design. Kim is supporting Collaborative Architecture with her embodied and operational carbon research through tool testing and participated in feasibility studies. She is eager to continue exploring new building technologies to contribute to a greener future.
