Session Abstract:
The Town of Innisfil is transforming into a modern ‘garden city’ with a train station as its civic heart. This transit-oriented community (TOC), led by private developers and meeting provincial standards, positions the station as a catalyst for growth. This session will explore how transit architects and developers work together to support TOCs, highlighting strategies for creating sustainable, connected, and resilient urban environments.

About the Speakers:
Lisa D’Abbondanza

Principal, Practice Group Manager - Transit Facilities
Lisa has over 28 years of experience as both a Lead Design Architect and a Project Manager including 16 years specialising in Transit Architecture.
Her early career focused on a variety of building types as well as public community facilities. This history of working in community-focused architecture informs her approach to Transit Design and strengthens her belief that Transit Facilities and Transit Systems are community-enhancing endeavors. Lisa’s expertise includes station and transit systems: concept design, design development, urban design, client and stakeholder relations, code compliance, value engineering, and construction management.
Lisa understands all facets of project delivery for both DBB and AFP projects and has proven experience in the complexities of delivering cost-effective, high-quality architecture while meeting functionality, constructability, resilience, and beauty. Her experience and understanding of the complexities of diverse project procurement environments, enables her to partner with client and stakeholder groups alike, to build consensus without compromising design intent or integrity.

Varsha Kumar
M.ARCH, OAA
Associate, Architect
Varsha is an accomplished Architect with over 14 years of experience in transit, residential, and community-focused projects across Canada and India.
Currently, Varsha is the Project Manager for the Innisfil GO Mobility Hub, a new, developer-led, integrated transit station, as well as a Net Zero Bus Station in Guelph, Ontario. Her responsibilities include leading the coordination between clients, consultant teams, and project vendors; overseeing deliverable submissions; and maintaining seamless project operations.
In addition to her professional achievements, Varsha actively engages with the architectural community through her volunteer work at the Toronto Society of Architects. Since 2020, she has played a pivotal role on the executive team, co-leading initiatives such as Doors Open, Building Tours, and Climate Action. Varsha’s dedication to architectural excellence and community engagement is evident in her significant contributions and visionary leadership.
Varsha believes that social, cultural, spatial, and economic factors are essential in the design process, and she continuously seeks ways to create positive change through her work.
