Accessibility Changes with the 2021 I-Codes and ICC/A117.1-2017 Standard

This online course provides a summary, with some graphic examples, of the significant accessibility provision and application changes from the 2018 I-Codes and ICC/A117.1-2009 Standard to the 2021 I-Codes and ICC/A117.1-2017 Standard. It will focus on the I-Code accessibility changes, such as IBC Chapter 11, IEBC Chapter 3, and the ICC/A117.1-2017 Standard, because compliance with the ICC/A117.1-2017 Standard is triggered under the 2021 I-Codes.

These codes and standards have been recently adopted in states/cities surrounding NYS and the next edition to be adopted by NYS will most likely be the 2024 I-Codes with NYS modifications.

So, this course is intended to assist design professionals in understanding the changes that have taken effect in some jurisdictions already and that will most likely be coming to NYS in late 2024 (TBD).

 Learning Objectives:

1. Explain the status of accessibility changes in some surround NYS jurisdictions and upcoming changes for NYS in 2024.
2. Examine the significant accessibility provision changes in the 2021 IBC to understand what triggers may differ from previous IBC requirements.
3. Identify the significant accessibility provision changes in the 2021 IEBC to understand what triggers may differ from previous existing building code requirements.
4. Once knowing the code triggers that differ, then explain the application of accessibility features in both new construction and existing buildings that significantly differ from the 2009 ICC/A117.1 edition.

Please note if you have already taken this program during your current licensure period you will NOT be eligible to receive this credit again.

Instructor:

Laura M. Cooney, AIA, has almost 30 years of combined experience in architecture, management, code consulting, and code training. Her architectural experience consists mainly of health care, governmental, and commercial facilities. While she still practices architecture, her main focus has been building codes for the past 18 years.

She has just started providing code training presentations on her own again. As in the past 18 years, Laura has successfully designed and presented many programs covering code training for the transition to new code editions in NYS, overview courses, and more detailed or custom courses.  The presentations are geared toward design professionals and AIA chapters around the state, but facility personnel, contractors, and owners also benefit from the information provided.

Laura is a NYS Certified Code Enforcement Officer, as well.  When not giving training programs she works at Bergmann/CED as a Sr. Technical Discipline Lead for the NE Architecture group, providing internal code compliance reviews, support, and mentorship to staff, providing code compliance analysis and assistance to clients, and she also provides code compliance reviews to other design professionals.
