At the 2023
Annual General Meeting (AGM), held virtually on May 3, the Association honoured its newest Members of Long Standing—individuals who have reached the milestone of 50 years of membership with the OAA as part of Ontario’s architecture profession. Among recipients this year was Sol Wassermuhl.
Sol grew up and studied in Montreal, graduating from McGill University School of Architecture in 1969. Upon graduation, he joined Page&Steele Architects, an established Toronto-based firm founded in 1926, working on diverse projects including office, hotel, residential, and institutional uses.
Sol was registered as an architect with the OAA in 1973. Working his way through the ranks, he became an Associate in 1980, a Partner in 1989, and ultimately Senior Partner in 1992. His contributions to the field were acknowledged with his induction into the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s (RAIC) College of Fellows in 2001. Sol also played a pivotal role as a founding member of the Toronto Design Review Panel for three years.
Page&Steele experienced significant growth under Sol’s guidance, boasting a diverse clientele and completing numerous office buildings, hotels, residential projects, and complex mixed-used developments. To expand the practice and mitigate local recessions, Sol orchestrated a merger between Page&Steele and IBI in 2007, establishing a multidisciplinary firm with global offices. Sol continued to lead the architectural practice as Director of Page+Steele/IBI Architects, while also nurturing and mentoring emerging leaders from the legacy Page&Steele team.
Recently acquired by the multinational firm Arcadis, Sol continues to practise with the IBI Group of Arcadis. He continues to generate new projects, design special ventures, and impart his experience on mentoring the next generation of architects.
Throughout the course of his five-decade career, Sol has designed and realized a diverse portfolio of projects, many winning Design Awards from Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Brampton, Mississauga, and Oakville.
