Once the world's largest geodesic dome, measuring 145m in diameter and rising 38 m above the playing surface, the Poliedro of Caracas was designed by Venezuelan architect Jimmy Alcock in collaboration with Hector Hermidas and Roberto Andrade. The dome's structure was highly influenced by the work of American architect Buckminister Fuller who in 1967 completed a 76 diameter geodesic sphere for the Expo67 in Montreal.
Completed in 1974 as the city's main venue for large events and capable of holding up to 13,500 spectators, the Poliedro has hosted a wide variety of activities, including the basketball competitions for the 1983 Pan American Games.
