Get to Know a Current Councillor - Settimo Vilardi

OAA Council serves as the board of directors for the Ontario Association of Architects. With election season kicking off later this fall, the OAA asked Councillors what made them want to run in the first place.

Settimo Vilardi is a Windsor-based Architect and a principal with Archon Architects Inc. He is the Association’s immediate past-President and Chairs the OAA’s Policy Advisory Coordination Team (PACT). He currently holds one of the Western Ontario seats for Council.

Why did you first decide to run for Council?

It was really a natural evolution for me. I spent many years at our local Windsor Region Society of Architects as an executive, holding positions as treasurer and then chair. I had been a part of other committees, including serving as president of our student society at the University of Toronto School of Architecture when I was enrolled in the Master of Architecture program. Finally, through the positive encouragement of Councillors at that time, I decided I had acquired enough professional and committee experience that I could significantly contribute to the OAA.

What do you enjoy or appreciate about the experience?

There are really a few things I enjoyed and valued the most. Firstly, the people—the OAA members, staff, and representatives from allied organizations that I was able to connect with and learn from. Secondly, understanding and appreciating the complexity of a self-regulating body and the immense responsibility we have as design professionals. And, finally, by contributing my knowledge and experience on the many committees, including Council, I am doing my part to ensure professional standards are maintained so our profession continues to make a positive impact on society.

What would you say to someone thinking about pursuing a nomination for the very first time?

Do it…but for the right reasons. By this, I mean that your role on Council is really an altruistic one, as you’re there to support the greater profession, architectural education, and work in the public interest, rather than your own. That’s not to say you won’t get anything out of it personally or professionally, but this should not be your primary goal.

This year, there are five seats for Architects and one seat for a Licensed Technologist to join Council and guide the Association in regulating the practice of architecture to protect the public interest. To learn more about running or the general processes, visit the Council Elections page
