CSA Standards on Accessibility: Free for OAA Licensed Members

Accessibility remains an increasingly important topic in architecture given Canada’s aging population and the awareness that everyone benefits from an environment meeting the needs of people with diverse abilities. With this in mind, the OAA suggests members become more familiar with:

  • CSA B355-19, Platform Lifts and Stair Lifts for Barrier-Free Access (referenced in the National Building Code and Ontario Building Code); and
  • CSA B651-18, Accessible Design for the Built Environment (as referenced in the National Building Code).

Additionally, members may also want to read the revised CSA B651-23, Accessible Design for the Built Environment, also available within the OAA’s Standards Access Program. While not yet referenced in the building code, it is good to see the direction being taken and to, where possible, “future-proof” your designs.

Architects should register or renew immediately by getting their access code on the member side of the OAA Website.
