According to the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes (CCBFC) Policy Position Paper on Accessibility in Buildings, the term “accessibility” encompasses several characteristics that ensure buildings and other facilities are easy to use, safe, and comfortable; it enables people of all ages and abilities to participate fully in all aspects of life.
Accessibility remains an increasingly important topic in architecture given Canada’s aging population and the rise in reports of limitations to everyday activities for those with disabilities. With this in mind, the OAA suggests members review, and become more familiar with, the following CSA standards:
- CSA B355:19, Platform Lifts and Stair Lifts for Barrier-Free Access (as referenced in the National Building Code and Ontario Building Code); and
- CSA B651-18, Accessible Design for the Built Environment (as referenced in the National Building Code).
These documents can be accessed for free by OAA licensed members who register for the OAA’s Standards Access Program, which offers viewing access through CSA OnDemand to all CSA documents referenced in the National Building Code and the Ontario Building Code.
CSA Standards are important reference tools to ensure design and construction meet building code requirements. In upholding its responsibility to serve the public interest, the OAA provides access to these pertinent documents to ensure prohibitive costs are not a barrier to access.
