OAA Licensed Members Can Now Access the CSA Standards on Parking Structure Standards

Parking structures can be standalone or part of multi-use buildings. They have some unique attributes that are different from those of an office building. One of the fundamental differences is there must be a continuous circulation system that provides vehicular access from one floor to the next.

In many cases, parking structures are unconditioned spaces open to severe weather and climate changes. Some issues to consider include use of proper drainage to avoid standing water, high-quality concrete, protection for reinforcing steel, adequate clearance and slope for sprinklers, and regular maintenance of the structure.

With this in mind, the OAA suggests members review, and become more familiar with, the following CSA documents on the topic:
  • CSA S413, Parking Structures (as referenced in the National Building Code and Ontario Building Code); and
  • CSA A23.3, Design of Concrete Structures (as referenced in the National Building Code and Ontario Building Code).
These documents can be accessed for free by OAA licensed members who register for the OAA’s Standards Access Program, which offers viewing access through CSA OnDemand to all CSA documents referenced in the National Building Code and the Ontario Building Code.
