JACOBS, Stephen B., Architect
We write with great sadness to announce that our founder and mentor, Stephen B. Jacobs, FAIA passed away on Tuesday December 14, 2021 in Lyme, CT. He was 82.
Stephen was born in Lódź, Poland in 1939, three months before the start of WWII. He was one of the youngest survivors of the Buchenwald concentration camp. He immigrated to the United States in 1948, settling in New York City. Stephen received his Masters of Architecture from Pratt Institute in 1965 and founded his own firm in 1967. He would go on to lead Stephen B. Jacobs Group to prominence in partnership with his wife, Andi Pepper, an interior designer, specializing in large-scale residential projects, historic preservation, and hospitality development. Some of the firm’s most notable projects include the Gansevoort, Library and Giraffe hotels, the Edge and Level BK developments in Brooklyn, Hotel X Toronto, in Canada, and The Encore and Hawthorne Park residential towers in Lincoln Center.
Stephen resided in Manhattan's Upper West Side, where he was an early Community Board 7 member, and Lyme, Connecticut. He is survived by his wife Andi Pepper Jacobs, his sons Doren and Jordan Jacobs, and his brother Dr. George B. Jacobs.
Stephen will be deeply missed, and we look forward to carrying on his legacy.
Sincerely,
Alexander B. Jacobs, AIA LEEP AP
