April 10, 1945 - September 17, 2018
THOMPSON, Rand, Member
It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Rand Thompson on Monday, September 17, 2018. Rand was born in Vancouver in 1945. He attended Magee High School and UBC, graduating with Bachelor Degrees in Mathematics and Architecture. While at UBC, Rand was able to spend a term at Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, an experience that he spoke fondly of over the years. Another highlight for Rand in the early years was working for Arthur Erickson. In 1981, Rand co-founded Chernoff Thompson Architects with Russell Chernoff. Rand's keen business sense and his design contributions were instrumental to the success of CTA, as well as the associated firms, Chernoff Thompson Architects North and Jensen Chernoff Thompson Architects (Victoria).
Rand loved being an architect and was passionate about proportion, space, symmetry and design. He talked best with a pen in his hand, drawing as he went. Rand was a natural mentor, calm, measured, systematic and practical, but with a sense of humor and a way of making everything seem simple.
Rand loved to sail, golf and travel with his friends and family. Together, Claire and Rand traveled Europe extensively, and made many trips to New York and Palm Springs with architecture and art being a focus.
Rand's legacy lives on through his numerous works and his loving family. He will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, his insightful contributions and his love for his family.
Rand is survived by his wife of 49 years Claire, brothers David (Patsy) and Michael (Debra), son Scott (Laura) and grandchildren Rowan and Audrey. He will be deeply missed and will live on in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday, October 27 at the West Vancouver Yacht Club, 5854 Marine Drive, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Rand may be made to the Salvation Army or BC Cancer Foundation.
