Hillel Ian Roebuck, Former OAA Registrar and Life member
1941 – July 29, 2024
Hillel passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024 at Sunnybrook Hospital. Born in 1941, he was the beloved husband of Minga, loving father and father-in-law of Matthew and Victoria Roebuck, and Kerry and Andrew Osten, and the devoted grandfather of Sophie, Micah, Joshua, and Sarah.
Hillel is known by most OAA members for his role leading the Office of the Registrar at the OAA for 23 years, from 1988 until retirement in December 2011. His background as a practising Architect enabled him to serve as a fair and informed registrar, acting in both the best interests of the public and the profession. Hillel oversaw all the activities related to provincial architectural regulation, architectural education, public complaints, and discipline cases. Equally important was his work with the OAA's governing Council of the day, which enabled it to act in an informed manner on behalf of the public and profession.
Hillel was influential in the development of the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) , the creation of the National Reciprocity Agreement between provinces, the development of the Inter-Recognition agreement with the United States, and the development of the Examination for Architects in Canada (ExAC). When he was made a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) in 2012, his bio summed up the feelings of many: "Hillel is the most respected Provincial Registrar in Canada and is well known internationally as the spokesman for the Profession. Hillel has acted with the interests of the Architectural Profession in mind and has done so with great diligence and enthusiasm."
