The OAA’s Local Architectural Societies provide opportunities for dialogue between local architects and the wider community, networking for those in the profession, and outreach with the public. They are an important extension of the OAA and help to further the objectives of the Association. Next year, membership dues will increase for most Societies to more accurately reflect cost increases and better support their work.
The operation and administration of the Societies are set out in the OAA Bylaws, and includes the discretion of each Society to establish its own annual membership dues. Over the past year, the OAA has engaged in ongoing discussions with the Chairs of all 14 Societies, along with Council liaisons, regarding these potential increases. A survey over the summer, shared with all Ontario Architects, showed more than half of respondents were in favour, especially given the fact there has been only one increase in more than 20 years. The Societies have collectively and individually used this information to help inform their decision of an appropriate level of an annual membership due.
The Association continues to work in collaboration with the Societies in reviewing the funding mechanisms and budgetary needs to gain a transparent, comprehensive understanding of operational costs in relation to the levels of activity and programming. In addition to Society membership dues, the OAA provides additional funding to each Society based on the number of members who have joined. The total amount allocated to each Society is based on a sliding scale and calculated during the annual renewal process. Individual Societies can also apply annually for special project funding to carry out projects or events that cannot be covered by current assets of a Local Society.
The OAA is currently reviewing financial models, including a reassessment of per capita funding. These discussions will be presented to Council for further evaluation.
