All Intern Architects and Student Associates Now in Fourth Edition
As of July 1, 2022, the 4th Edition of the Internship in Architecture Program (IAP) has been fully implemented. The new IAP changes include:
- students may record up to a maximum of 760 hours of pre-graduation experience gained while enrolled and attending an accredited program of architecture, and while completing the final two years of a CACB/NAAB-accredited Master’s program (Student Associate status must be held with the OAA while gaining the pre-graduation experience);
- clarifications acknowledging not all ROAC (formerly CALA) jurisdictions recognize the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) administered by NCARB or international experience (OAA continues to accept both);
- revised eligible experience area descriptions and categories, including updated definitions to the required experience activities, new experience categories (Envelope Detailing and Energy Literacy/Sustainability), and a redistribution of hours required in each category;
- overall review of the level of required competency; and
- format revisions.
It is important to carefully read the IAP Manual, Appendix B to the IAP Manual and the Canadian Experience Record Book (CERB), which are updated and available for download on the OAA Website via the link above.
The 3rd Edition of the IAP ceased to exist on June 30, 2022. All Intern Architects and Student Associates must now complete the new program requirements of the 4th Edition of the IAP.
