The OAA recognizes National Indigenous History Month in June, and Tuesday, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, honouring the diverse histories and present-day experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Ontario.
As part of its recently announced five-year strategic plan, the OAA is committed to ongoing Reconciliation and building its partnerships with Indigenous communities to collaborate on meaningful projects. As this work continues, the Association will share relevant information on its Indigenous Architecture page, including news, events, and educational opportunities.
Last year, the OAA announced its new Exceptional Leadership Through Design Excellence: Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) and Truth & Reconciliation scholarship, an award administered at the discretion of each of the Ontario Schools of Architecture, and will share some of the recipients in the weeks to come. Earlier this month, the Association also posted a Land Acknowledgment recognizing the history of where its headquarters is located. The acknowledgment was developed in partnership with Creative Fire, an Indigenous-owned consulting agency that provides expertise in strategy, communications, Indigenous engagement, and Reconciliation action plans.
The Canadian federal government has launched a portal for further resources related to National Indigenous History Month, which includes a search function for events taking place on June 21.
