TSA Technical Series: Indoor Air Quality

Description:
The average North American spends over 90% of their time indoors, making the quality of our indoor environments fundamental to promoting health and wellbeing. How much is really known about the air we breathe indoors and how often is it considered in design? Although the COVID-19 pandemic brought much attention to indoor air quality from a disease transmission perspective, design strategies to improve indoor air quality are still largely underutilised.

This workshop aims to help change that by providing attendees with an overview of indoor air quality and practical considerations that can be applied to future design projects. Join us for this one hour virtual lecture with Sandra Dedesko, a healthy buildings PhD Candidate and researcher at Harvard University, who will walk us through the importance of indoor air quality for human health and wellbeing; the fundamentals of indoor air quality, centred around the hierarchy of indoor air quality controls for building design; and close with examples and resources of simple considerations that can be taken on all projects to promote indoor air quality and occupant health and wellbeing, in turn.

Sandra Dedesko is a PhD candidate in Dr. Joseph Allen’s Healthy Buildings Program at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Her research interests centre on indoor environmental quality and building design strategies that improve occupant health while balancing building energy consumption. Sandra has a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Civil Engineering and continues to pursue her interests in building design by taking classes in the Building Technology department at MIT. Before pursuing her PhD, Sandra worked in the sustainable building design industry as an engineering consultant while also developing and delivering education through the University of Toronto, the Canada Green Building Council, and the International Well Building Institute. Sandra is passionate about research translation and continues to serve as an advisor for various building standards and guidelines. She is motivated to combine her building science and engineering background with newfound skills and training in public health to help create healthier and more sustainable built environments.
