As an exercise in sustainable building within a specfic cultural context, UBC professor John Bass' studio collaborations with the Nuxalk First Nation offer illuminating lessons for designers. Join him and Nuxalk knowledge keeper Snxakila Clyde Michael Tallio for a discussion on how the building of cabins from a local supply chain have also fulfilled the important function of reconciling the Nation's needs and aspirations.

John Bass is Associate Professor and Chair of Architecture at the University of British Columbia's School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. His teaching and research address contested landscapes and he has worked with several B.C. First Nations on collaborative design projects. A member of the Nuxalk First Nation, Snxakila Clyde Michael Tallio is currently its Cutural Director. He is managing the development of the Nation’s first Big House in over 100 years.
