The Soul of the City: Six Writers and Scholars on their Favourite Cultural Landmark

Tuesdays, 10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
March 25, 2025 - May 06, 2025

In this exciting new series by The Speakers Annex, six of Canada’s leading writers and lecturers join the Speakers Annex to explore the rich history and cultural significance of their favourite cultural landmark in a great world city.

As we take a globe-trotting journey from a world heritage site on the banks of the Seine in Paris to a dazzling art collection in Washington, DC to a palace in Berlin and a mouthwatering bakery where countless Toronto children have begged their parents for treats, we’ll explore how these beloved local institutions embody the soul of their cities—winning the hearts of locals and admirers around the world.

Featuring:

  • Lisa Pasold on Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
  • Julia Zarankin on The Merriweather-Post Art Collection in Washington, DC
  • Teresa Lobalsamo on Caff Gambrinus in Naples, Italy
  • Peter Harris on the Berlin City Palace and its Humboldt Forum Museum
  • Ira Wells on the New York Public Library
  • David Sax on Toronto’s Harbord Bakery!

The full syllabus will be revealed in January.
