Adaptive reuse offers a way to eliminate waste, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce embodied carbon by reusing existing structures. Beyond its environmental impact, this approach positively influences social, cultural, and economic aspects across various building types, from housing to cultural spaces.

This year's International Architectural Roundtable, co-sponsored by the OAA, will explore strategies for adaptive reuse around the world, focusing on balancing the preservation of architectural heritage with modern needs. It will feature a welcome by OAA President Settimo Vilardi, and will be moderated by architectural writer and critic, Adele Weder. The panellists are:

  • Andrew Lee (SOM, United States);
  • Wonne Ickz (Productora, Mexico);
  • Rob Cadeau (Architects-Alliance, Canada)
  • Philip Evans (ERA Architects, Canada); and
  • Marcela Steinbachová (Skupina, Czechia).

The roundtable helps kick off The Buildings Show, which brings together architects and other design/construction/real estate professionals from around the world to Toronto, December 4 to 6. In addition, there are dozens of architectural-focused Continuing Education sessions throughout the event, exploring topics ranging from AI’s impact on design to acoustics and biophilia, 3D-printed concrete, supertall case studies, and building information modelling (BIM).
