1.5 ConEd Learning Hours
2:00 p.m.‐ 3:30 p.m.
In the United States and Europe, “Care Farm” has been referred to the therapeutic use of farm activities to promote human health, social inclusion, and educational benefits. It provides a therapeutic social environment where people could engage in nature and participating in a living and learning environment. This seminar explores design concept and practical ideas of implementing therapeutic farm in single and multi‐unit dwellings.
The therapeutic farm shall be designed as a safe space, a friendly setting where there is no discrimination and all are welcome. Food has always been at the centre of human well‐being discussions. This seminar proposes an indoor therapeutic food system as a multifunctional care farm that is an intentional combination of food production, nature therapy, and interactive reasoning and thinking exercises. Food sovereignty design that addresses food security, safety, diversity, and production responsibility will be used to regenerate physical health; biophilic design (which employs eight of the 15 Patterns of Biophilic Design from Terrapin Bright Green) will be used to regenerate mental health; neurocognitive design with brain‐stimulating activities will be used to regenerate cognitive health. This seminar demonstrates integrated food system is an essential component in resilient and regenerative dwelling design for inclusive, equal, and diversified communities.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe indoor therapeutic food systems.
2. Explain how indoor therapeutic food systems regenerate physical, mental, and cognitive well‐being of building occupants.
3. Explore design concepts and ideas of therapeutic food systems in dwellings.
4. Know the opportunities and advantages of designing therapeutic food systems in dwellings.
