Experience the beauty, education, and cultural significance of Manitoulin Island.
“The Unceded Journey” is a transformational tour where you will experience the true history of Manitoulin Island and learn how Wiikwemkoong came to be Canada’s only officially recognized Unceded Territory. This unique learning experience has the power to foster relationships and promote the concept of Reconciliation between all nations, often changing perspectives on the current narrative of the history of Indigenous people in Canada.
Historic points include the 1836 Historic Stop (2 o’clock lookout), the Holy Cross Mission and former Residential School, and the Manitoulin Incident (Wikwemikong Marina). Additionally, a clan governance presentation at Bebamikawe Memorial Trail offers a firsthand understanding of how Indigenous (Anishinaabek) people have governed themselves and organized their families for time immemorial.
An Indigenous People’s Day celebration in the community also offers culinary options to choose from for lunch as well as immersive cultural experiences on Summer Solstice. Explore Wikwemikong, the 2023 Indigenous Tourism Association Exceptional Industry Leader Award winner.
