2023 Conference | June 21 - 23, Sudbury | Laurentian University

Sudbury: The Gateway to Northern Ontario

The OAA held its 2023 Conference in Sudbury from June 21 to 23, with more than 320 attendees coming together for a learning program focused on Designing for Dignity. In addition to a slate of Continuing Education sessions with international experts that combined in-class learning with experiential opportunities out and around the city, the event also included special events like the Plenary, the Sudbury Kitchen Party, the Northern Ontario Society of Architects (NOSA) mixer, and the SHIFT2023 Challenge and Honours evening.

Led by experts from across the province and around the world, the event offered the opportunity for delegates to earn Structured ConEd hours in award-winning buildings, university campuses, and rugged settings in an experiential learning approach. Sessions covered a range of topics from long-term care and livability to cultural integrity and design in a post-COVID environment.

The 2023 Conference explores Designing for Dignity:

Ontario’s architecture profession has the skills, education, and perspective to shape the built environments in which we all live and thrive, and this extends beyond cities and suburbs. For the first time, the OAA is holding its annual conference at the gateway to Northern Ontario—a place of resource extraction and regeneration, of remoteness and richness, of communities and challenges. The setting prompts us to have new conversations as well as to learn from and collaborate with local communities about the role the profession must play in supporting dignity for all.

This Conference will acknowledge those who call Sudbury home, from diverse Indigenous groups and Franco-Ontarians to urbanites, students, and those living in isolated areas. Throughout the province and around the world, it will explore how the architecture profession can better accommodate human needs by listening to local communities. It examines the imperative of respecting the land and planning for several generations... while also considering the need for safe housing, healthy spaces, and inspiring projects here and now.

Online Registration for the 2023 OAA Conference is now closed. The full three-day delegate package is $985.
