Using the New AISC and ASCE Specifications for Sustainable & Resilient Structural Stainless Steel Design

TIME: 1:00PM - 2:00 PM EST

Stainless steel’s inherent strength, corrosion resistance, high recycled content, and performance under fire conditions make it an ideal choice for sustainable and resilient structural design.

Specifying its use has been facilitated by the publication of new documents:  AISC 370-22 Specification for Structural Stainless Steel Buildings, AISC 313-22 Code of Standard Practice for Structural Steel Buildings, and the substantial revision of ASCE/SEI 8-22 Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Stainless Steel Structural Members.

The panel discussion will introduce these publications, present case-studies illustrating their application, and provide the perspectives of a producer, fabricator, engineer and architect on their benefits in the design of structural stainless steel.

HSW Justification: Structural stainless steel’s primary application is related to human safety for its longevity, failure avoidance/durability and resilience, but also for its high level of cleanability (sanitation) and inherent sustainability.

Learning Objectives:
• Learn about the new AISC and SEI/ASCE 8 specifications, code and design guide and resources for selection of stainless steel for structural applications.
• Hear a producer, fabricator, engineer and architect’s perspectives on the sustainability of stainless steel.
• Acquire knowledge about how the inherent resilience of structural stainless steel is being used in design and how it compares with other metals.
• Discover where stainless steel is being used structurally and the reasons for its selection.
