Using a rainscreen cladding system on framed and mass backup wall structures is a fundamental concept in Canadian climates. But...
How does a rainscreen system change (or does it?) when exterior insulation is added to meet energy performance demands?
What R-value of insulation is needed to achieve energy targets?
How do these decisions impact where air barrier, water control, and vapour barrier/retarder layers are located?
Grow your building enclosure problem-solving skills:
-Identify the characteristics of a rainscreen cladding system.
-Describe the control layers in a wall assembly and when the location of these layers may change.
-Differentiate between actual and evaluated thermal performance.
-Interpret how required R-values change based on your project’s jurisdiction and code compliance path.
-Identify thermal bridges and concepts to optimize enclosure performance.
-Identify how cladding and insulation selection bolsters water and thermal performance.
-Educate others on exterior-insulated wall system solutions that meet high-performance building goals.
About the Presenter
RDH Building Science is an award-winning building science firm and industry leader drawing on the disciplines of research & development, energy & sustainability, enclosure & façade design, structural engineering, and construction to inform the development of more durable, resilient, sustainable, safe, and healthy buildings.
This event will be delivered by Dr. John Straube. A prominent figure throughout North America, Dr. Straube is an influential and driving force in the industry. Well-known in a variety of building science and research circles, he helps guide the direction of RDH and is seen as a mentor to staff at all levels.
He has broad experience in the building industry and is considered an international expert, having been involved in the design, construction, repair, and restoration of buildings in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.
Dr. Straube is also known for his academic contributions as an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and the School of Architecture at the University of Waterloo, where he teaches courses to both disciplines in structural design, material science, and building science.
