Mechanical Design in Sustainable Buildings and the Important Relationship with the Building Envelope

This presentation will outline the importance of the envelope design when designing a high-performance, sustainable building. We will discuss the impact it can have on reducing mechanical loads and on the mechanical design options.

Speakers

Mike Godawa, Introba
Mike is a Senior Principal and the Director of Engineering Services for Canada East at Introba. Mike has been on the front end of innovative mechanical systems design for 35 years. In his career as a Professional Mechanical Engineer, Mike has continually endeavored to find new and innovative ways to design buildings that raise the bar in energy efficiency. A licensed engineer in seven provinces and two territories, his breadth of experience spans multiple sectors including higher education, healthcare, sports & recreation, justice facilities, laboratories, and commercial buildings.
Mike has always supported finding innovative and more energy-efficient ways of designing buildings including Net Zero and Passive House Design. This drive towards providing clients with reliable, low-energy systems has resulted in the delivery of numerous high-performance buildings including award-winning breakthrough projects such as George Brown College, Limberlost Place, which is a tall mass timber, naturally ventilated academic building targeting Net Zero Carbon and TRCA’s New Headquarters that features multiple solar chimneys with water walls, geo-exchange and radiant heating/cooling ceilings.

Eric Campbell, Introba
Eric is a Professional Engineer and an Associate at Introba with the Sustainability team. He is passionate about passive, net positive building design and enjoys complex engineering analyses and problem solving.
He believes that a truly sustainable building goes beyond achieving zero carbon; that it must be resilient and seek to improve the environment, and that this starts with passive systems design that reduces or eliminates the need for mechanical equipment rather than using mechanical equipment to remedy upstream design choices. He embraces the challenge of minimizing whole-life carbon emissions and leads a team-based approach that seeks to harmonize design efforts to achieve this goal by balancing energy and carbon reduction efforts with occupant comfort and well-being.

Attendance Policy:
Members are required to attend at least 80% of a webinar in order to qualify for Continuing Education learning hours.

Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours prior to the webinar in order to receive a refund. Webinar fees are not refunded if the cancellation is received after the deadline or if you are unable to attend.
