Building the Business Case to Build Sustainably

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Session Abstract:
The costs of Climate Change have become tragically obvious over the last few years.  To the point where we can't afford not to take action.  Construction budgets, however, have been stressed by rising inflation, interest rates, labour shortages, and supply chain issues.  Leaving many clients and architects wanting to do better by the climate but feeling risk-averse.  This is a false choice, there are win-win strategies that deliver on cost savings and climate change solutions. But it all starts with a bit of math in a Life Cycle Cost Assessment (LCCA).  LCCAs are becoming more prevalent among clients and the Federal Government requires an LCCA for every project. The impact of an LCCA on our designs, and on our planet, are too important to leave solely to accountants.

An LCCA can be an important tool to support sustainable design moves that are the right thing to do but also affordable.  In this webinar, participants will be walked through the basics of an LCCA both how to evaluate one prepared by others and the basis for preparing your own. The presenters will show how an LCCA was leveraged to support green design measures on an Ontario Hospital project and how a design optimised through an LCCA has delivered +$1M savings year over year for another Ontario Hospital.

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the session, participants will be able to:
• Describe the importance of a Life Cycle Cost Assessment.
• Assess sustainable design options using a Life Cycle Cost Assessment.
• Evaluate a Life Cycle Cost Assessment to support sustainable measures.
• Describe how the case study presented provides an economic argument for a sustainable architectural response.

About the speakers:
Peter Duckworth-Pilkington
Peter has over 25 years of experience gained on projects as diverse as townhouses to corporate campuses and master planning of entire urban precincts. As project architect or sustainability lead, he has overseen the design of more than 20 LEED-certified schools, community centres, libraries, high-performance sport venues, university buildings, and high-rise mixed-use developments. In an attempt to walk the talk, Peter is a four-season bicycle commuter, and lives in the "green laneway home" he designed for his family. He has also lectured and written widely on the subject of sustainable building.

Jeff Mosher, LEED AP BD+C, EDAC, CPHD
Jeff Mosher is a LEED and EDAC-accredited professional with 15 years of industry experience primarily focused on the design and construction of healthcare facilities. A member of the Canada Green Building Council (Ottawa Chapter) and co-founder of Permaculture Ottawa, Jeff's recent experience with integrated P3 project delivery on some of Ontario's largest healthcare infrastructure projects has given him unique insights into best practices in not just reducing the carbon footprint of our buildings, but in planning for Climate Resiliency to prepare for those changes that may be all but inevitable.
