A Specification Based Approach to Embodied Carbon – Discoveries, Challenges, and Opportunities

TIME: 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM

Session Abstract:
The current discourse surrounding embodied carbon in architecture has been focused on how both design based as well as broad stroke strategies can decarbonize buildings. The WGB’s Report “Bringing Embodied Carbon Upfront” suggests both as tools for carbon reduction and although these methodologies do reduce carbon, they are only one side of the story. A specification based strategy takes an analytical approach to carbon through a quantifiable assessment of a project; addressing the reduction of embodied carbon within our buildings in a more holistic and detailed way. This presentation is a summary of findings from our corporate R&D sustainability initiative specifically aimed at investigating the carbon value of each and every single product used in our specification; from typical products to low carbon material substitutions. This webinar expands on what a specification based strategy means in action, the results of its application, the significant information gaps revealed through this process, and the "Carbon Disconnect"; have decarbonization goals been enacted with a full understanding of these real issues? The goal: not only to provide a deeper knowledge of the systemic and logistical issues in reducing embodied carbon, but to advocate for architects to reach out to industry and create tangible change.

Learning Outcomes:
• Articulate the existing methods to reduce embodied carbon in architecture, and what makes a specification based strategy different
• Understand the considerations for developing a decarbonized specification.
• Recognise the significant challenges, lack of data and testing present in the methods we have to reduce embodied carbon within the built environment
• Articulate and Implement opportunities for advocacy and education and create real change through small yet meaningful interventions

About the speaker:
Lara Gumushdjian joined KIRKOR in 2015, having concluded her Master’s degree from the University of Toronto’s John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design. Her ability to orchestrate large groups on complex programs has helped see the development of KIRKOR’s many successful projects. Regardless of scale, her attention to detail and passion for architecture is implemented in her work every day. In addition to independently overseeing projects, she spearheads the research and development of KIRKOR’s sustainability initiatives, the creation of standard documents and guidelines for the firm, and has taken the role of mentor amongst many of her peers.
