Windows As The Weakest Link In The Thermal Envelope

This course covers the following:

Importance of incremental improvements in these elements;

The four elements which can increase the insulating performance of a window;

Possibilities of replacing glass in old windows;

Using two or more low-e's to achieve higher insulating values;

Insulating spacers: Back up sealants and gas retention;

The use of argon, krypton, and xenon to enhance insulating properties of sealed units;

Seal warranties: "the fine print" -- exclusions, pro-rating, etc;

Evolution of materials from metal and wood, to vinyl, to fiberglass and other composites;

Energy numbers: U-values, VLT, SHGC;

Safety and security. "Egress windows" & safety glass: heat strengthened, laminated, wired, and fire-resistant;

Exterior trim, and "panning" for weathersealing, aesthetics;

The unit cost of windows, compared to other parts of shell: wall, roof, foundation.
