Complaints due to excessive winds and other microclimate issues such as snow, air quality and noise can compromise the image of a building in the eyes of the public. The assessment of wind and microclimate conditions is often required by municipal authorities for zoning and site plan applications, and must meet applicable building codes and environmental regulations. These issues can be addressed at various design stages, and early design decisions on building massing have the most profound impact on the potential wind and microclimate conditions. Architectural and landscaping details can also be employed to create localized wind and microclimate protection. Through this course, we will teach the participants: Fundamentals of wind flows around buildings Typical wind and climate control features and their effectiveness Wind comfort and other safety criteria, and local meteorology Analysis techniques including wind tunnel testing and computer simulations Presenters: John J.
