When Shopify announced that the move to remote work would be a permanent one for most of their staff, many saw it as a bellwether event that would change the makeup of cities forever. Do we no longer require the interplay of a downtown business district close to residential neighbourhoods and the mix of services and entertainment that comprise a vibrant urban centre? Join Interim Dean Kenneth Corts as he welcomes Professors Richard Florida and Shauna Brail to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on cities, with particular focus on what this means as businesses prepare for the future of work.
About the presenters:
Richard Florida, PhD is Professor at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management and School of Cities, where he also serves as Chief Urbanist in the Creative Destruction Lab. He is a Distinguished Fellow at New York University. He is the author of more than ten books including The Rise of the Creative Class and more than one hundred books chapters and articles in peer-reviewed academic journals. He is a Senior Editor at The Atlantic, where he co-founded and serves as Editor-at Large for CityLab, the world’s leading publication devoted to cities and urbanism. Florida previously taught at Carnegie Mellon, George Mason University and Ohio State University, and has been a visiting professor at Harvard and MIT and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution. He earned his Bachelor's degree from Rutgers College and his Ph.D. from Columbia University.
Shauna Brail, PhD is Director and Associate Professor, Urban Studies Program as well as Associate Director, Partnerships & Outreach, School of Cities at the University of Toronto. As an economic geographer and urban planner, Brail’s research focuses on the transformation of cities as a result of economic, social, and cultural change. Brail is a Senior Associate at the Innovation Policy Lab in the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and a faculty affiliate at the University of Toronto Transportation Research Institute. From 2015-2018, Brail was the Presidential Advisor on Urban Engagement at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining the University, she worked in management consulting and in the Ontario provincial government.
Kenneth Corts, Ph.D. is the Interim Dean of the Rotman School of Management. He is Professor of Economics Analysis and Policy and he holds the Marcel Desautels Chair in Entrepreneurship. Through his widely published research and teaching, Professor Corts applies advances in industrial organization economics, game theory, and competitive strategy to a wide range of problems and industries. His work addresses topics in pricing, network economics, technology adoption, organizational economics, and competition policy. Before joining the Rotman School, he was Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor in the Competition and Strategy area at Harvard Business School.
