TIME: 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM
The housing crisis and climate crisis are two of the most pressing local and global issues today. In Canada, climate action policies and funding incentives are driving a new generation of sustainable affordable housing. These developments demonstrate the significant strides that have been and are being made in energy conscious design. They continue to be challenged, however, when it comes to reducing their carbon footprint. The pursuit of quality, low carbon design and construction is constrained by many factors from building codes to market conditions. This session considers the different pathways to net-zero design available to designers, drawing on lessons learned from Peel Region's new benchmark project, Chelsea Gardens, and its pursuit of the CAGBC's Zero Cabon Building Standard. It looks critically at the trade-offs that have become commonplace in negotiating the carbon equation. And it discusses a series of new and emerging strategies for decarbonization and affordable climate-ready housing.
Note: This session is being submitted for OAA, ARIDO and IDCEC accreditation.
