Session Abstract:
The session is intended to familiarize the audience with the use of natural materials in buildings, specifically to reduce embodied carbon and limit the toxicity of the materials we use in construction
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand a bioregional approach to design
- Identify natural materials and associated construction techniques, their characteristics, provenance and uses
- Assess technical performance, including, health benefits, embodied energy and life cycle associated with natural materials
- Define the appropriate use of natural materials for building components in different regions and climatic conditions and understand building code considerations related to their use
About the Speaker:
Sam Dufaux is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto and a Principal at SvN Architects + Planners in Toronto. Dufaux teaches design studios and seminars that focus on the urgent transition to a low carbon construction industry around the use of natural and local materials.
Dufaux received his master’s degree from Columbia University in New York after earning his Bachelor of Architecture in Switzerland, where he is a licensed architect. Prior to joining the University of Toronto, Dufaux taught advanced design studios at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation at Columbia University.
