This presentation covers the necessity for specifying proper masonry mortar and grout products as per CSA A179-04. Over 20% of a masonry wall's surface area is taken up by mortar. It is an integral part of the design and engineering process. We also will explain how to properly choose products for specific applications and why. Masonry is the last product being manufactured on site. Premix mortars and grout will give the architect the confidence in specifying specific mixes, enabling exactness in properties desired and resulting proper strengths and masonry integrity.
The presentation will include a brief history of the development of mortars and grouts and the changes that have taken place in the current standard. Properties such as compressive strength, bond strength, air content, and water retentivity will be topics of discussion and their role in the characteristics of mortar and grout.
Environmental aspects of the system will be presented as well as an overview of potential leeds credits.
