The Butterfly Household Model of Care rests on the belief that for people experiencing dementia, feelings matter most, that emotional intelligence is the core competency and that “people living with a dementia can thrive well in a nurturing environment where those living and working together know how to “be” person centred together” (Dr. David Sheard, founder of the Butterfly Model) ‘Person-centred’ means doing more than just addressing clinical needs. It means connecting emotionally, which, due to dementia's impact on logic and memory, can be a powerful way to connect with people in a meaningful way. It means making the ‘house’ truly feel like home, a place we could welcome family and friends. By meeting people's physical and emotional needs, we never forget they are complex, valuable, feeling beings.
Butterfly Model of Dementia Care has been adopted in handful of places across Canada and in several countries globally including the UK and Australia. The impact of the Butterfly Model of Dementia Care has shown is creating successful options for dementia care creating a culture change that is showing positive outcomes for residents, staff and families. Butterfly nurtures leadership, staff, families and care partners to be person-centred and relationship focused through established methodologies, tools, and through a community of care. Region of Peel saw such success in the Program pilot it is adopting this model of care across all of the Region’s five LTC facilities by 2022 in addition to the dementia friendly Seniors Health and Wellness Village it is developing. Join us and learn from the leaders on this important project.
