Cottage Wilderness Retreats & Accessory Buildings Webinar

TIME: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Designing And Building With Pre-Fabricated Western Red Cedar Interlocking Systems

A cottage wilderness retreat becomes grounding and memories for a family through the generations. Their needs extend beyond layouts and views - from seeking naturally beautiful materials to durability and being environmentally friendly. As keen proponents of the environmental and health benefits of building with and living in wood structures, we will look at the ecological and carbon sequestrating benefits of wood buildings; how prefabricated interlocking wood building systems work especially well for remote sites; and explore some design trends in cottage wilderness retreats and accessory buildings (bunkies, bunk houses, studios, boat houses).

British Columbia is recognized as a global leader in sustainable forest management, and is home to Western Red Cedar which is the material of choice for its durability and beauty in cottage design. This session will explain the common log wood species, and especially the benefits of using Western Red Cedar. Further discussion will be around the architectural design guidelines of prefabricated interlocking building systems – perfect for building on islands, water-access lots or other remote locations, while leaving a low ecological impact.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn about the health and ecological benefits of living in wood structures, and how to achieve low material embodied emissions and high carbon sequestering structures.
2. Learn about the building advantages and properties using prefabricated interlocking building systems for country wilderness retreat sites, and off-grid remote building sites.
3. Learn about common log wood species, and more specifically the benefits of using Western Red Cedar– including how the wood is sustainably sourced, the machine milling process, the air- drying method, and care and maintenance.
4. Explore design trends in cottage wilderness retreats and accessory buildings (bunkies, bunk houses, studios, boat houses), and applying architectural design guidelines for prefabricated interlocking building systems

This session will be presented by an industry professional from Pan-Abode International Ltd.
