BIM or Building Information Modeling has arrived and along with it, the potential for enormous change in the delivery of architectural services. Proponents of BIM point to the potential to reduce costs, improve quality and achieve designs that would be impossible without digital design and fabrication. There is considerable information about benefits associated with BIM technology; however there are also risks and risk management opportunities for architects, clients and contractors that merit identification and discussion. This program will discuss attributes of BIM that conflict with the traditional notions of responsibility within the design and construction industry as well as possible alternative business and legal structures that support using BIM in a different, collaborative environment. Principal Speaker: Howard Ashcraft is a partner of the San Francisco law firm Hanson Bridgett LLP. He is a Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers; an honorary member of the AIA California Council and Steering Committee member on its task force for Integrated Project Delivery. He is the Procure Task Force Chair for the National Building Information Modeling Standard. His career includes experience with design and construction litigation and professional liability insurance. He is a well known speaker and writer on BIM and its impacts as well as an advocate for developing new approaches to project delivery that would avoid many of the litigation risks and opportunities common in today’s business model.
