Time: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
The new 2021 Mid-Rise Wood Building Guide provided by the Canadian Wood Council and Wood-Works, will explore in detail the opportunities and possibilities that exist by utilizing the Canadian code requirements.
This presentation will identify the key considerations and factors that influence structural form when designing a mid-rise building. Secondly, it will outline the code requirements, different structural systems- both light-frame and mass timber, business opportunities and identify key considerations in planning a project that should be considered. Lastly, it will illustrate design opportunities presented by the mid-rise requirements on a national scale.
Learning Objectives
1) Early design considerations in developing a mid-rise wood building in both light-frame and mass timber.
2) Building code requirements, including the variations in requirements across Canada.
3) Opportunities in design, including mix-use developments and densification strategies for urban environments.
4) Key technical design considerations, including structural, fire and acoustics.
Speaker(s)
Veronica Madonna, OAA, FRAIC, M.Arch., B.E.D.S., B.Arch.Sc.
Veronica Madonna is an award-winning Canadian Architect with over 17 years of experience working with leading architectural firms. She is licensed with the Ontario Association of Architects and is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada. Both a practitioner and educator, Veronica is an Assistant Professor at the RAIC Centre for Architecture at Athabasca University and the founder of her practice, Studio Veronica Madonna Architect.
Before establishing her firm, Veronica was a Principal with Moriyama & Teshima Architects, where she displayed unparalleled leadership on innovative, sustainable post-secondary design. Her portfolio includes 'The Arbour' George Brown College Tall Wood Building and Honey Bee Research Centre for the Ontario Agricultural College at the University of Guelph, both mass timber and highly sustainable projects that received international recognition.
As an educator, researcher and practitioner, Veronica's focus in architecture includes sustainable design strategies, advancements in mass timber construction, and equity in practice and education. She has lectured for the Canadian Green Building Council and is a member of the OAA Sustainable Built Environment Committee, and is actively involved in the architectural community.
Steven Street
Steven is a Technical & Business Development Consultant specializing in light frame and mass timber technologies. Steven explored his passion for good design, being around the best in engineering, architecture, and fabrication. Steven spent the last 20 years helping domestic markets develop new opportunities, change, and acceptance for wood structural systems. Having spent over 12 years working with the Canadian Wood Council’s Wood-Works initiative, Steven’s work provides a solid base of knowledge for design, off-site panelization and factory prefabrication.
In his current role, Steven works with project delivery teams, designers and owners, to better understand the possibilities available for prefabricated mass timber systems and delivery models. This approach harnesses the importance of value engineering and constructability with communication strategies. Steven’s passion is the rapidly emerging industrialization of wood construction utilizing the factory-built environment. We are in an age of great change and have the chance of participating in historical shifts to how we build. Climatic events, changing building codes, lack of quality affordable housing, and the changing cityscape are disrupting the business-as-usual approach. Steven is active on RESCON’s technical council, and also regularly presents at Colleges and Universities.
