The theme for our conference is “Bridging the Past, Crossing into the Future”. It is a direct reference to the new low- level bridge crossing the St. Lawrence, which is being constructed and will be open to traffic in the coming year. The committee feels the new bridge is a “new beginning” for Cornwall and an attraction we can build upon, to enhance the presence of our community. The bridge is a symbol, that represents the “how” when we discuss preserving the past and our heritage. How do we preserve the past, while keeping it relevant and current crossing into the future?
We will be discussing in a Plenary, the principle of Adaptive Re-use, creating a designing “new uses and new beginnings” for heritage and historically important buildings. Other seminars and workshops will include a tour and discussion about “the Cotton Mills District Development”, Heritage Culture and Tourism, Preservation of Artifacts and Documents, a panel discussion presenting Unique Construction/Integration; integrating the old with the new, Accessibility… and MORE including a tour of The Lost Villages.
