The Architecture of Toronto Hockey Barns by Grant MacEachern

This series of sketches has been ongoing since 2020. As an architect and a hockey dad I get to spend many hours inside the cold hockey arenas of Toronto. I am there every practice, in the stands, both watching and documenting the fast paced game. I give myself a challenge to sketch the essence of the hockey arena and kids within the 50-60 minutes time slot. My medium of choice these days is an iPad Pro with an Apple Pencil. I do miss the tactility of my analog sketch books but the efficiency of the iPad in my overall design workflow is hard to compare. Each arena has its own unique structural design solution. I am hoping my son stays with the game long enough for me to sketch all of the rinks in the GTA.
