I am sharing my concept design sketches of Packaging Institute, a project in India. The site was in a hot and dry climate zone and the concept was derived from the spatial hierarchy of traditional Bora Houses (which are very local and climate-centric). Some important elements of these houses include the Entrance Platform (Otla), Arrival Space (Deli), Central Courtyard (Avas), and rooms around the courtyard (Ordo). The upper floor has sleeping rooms and terraces (Agashi). The central courtyard acts as light and air shaft, helping to keep the house cool and ventilated. Zoning for the Packaging Institute also took inspiration from the region’s local architecture. The site’s blocks were further tilted to allow wind flow within the building while increasing its speed. This also helped to create in-between buffer spaces to be used by teachers and students. The concept was well received by clients and these sketches played an important role in conveying it.
