Allan Stone, Member of Long Standing

At the 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in May, the Association honoured its newest Members of Long Standing—individuals who have reached the milestone of 50 years of membership with the OAA as part of Ontario’s architecture profession. Among the recipients this year was Allan Stone.

Allan Stone graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1968. He worked with Martin Mendelow in Toronto for the next five years on a wide variety of projects including department stores, industrial buildings, and shopping centres… as well as on his boss’s house!

In 1973, Allan launched his own private practice and was an active partner until 2016. During that time, he worked on numerous projects including the restoration of the Bank of Upper Canada Building on Adelaide Street in Toronto, the restoration of 47 and 49 Front Street East in Toronto, and North York projects, including the design of the Ironworkers’ Pension Fund Building in North York, the Beth Radom Synagogue, the Highland Farms Superstore, the Idomo Design Center, and the DeBoer Furniture Store on Yonge Street.

Allan continues to work full-time, and his more recent projects include a new supermarket for Vince’s Market in Sharon, a 25-storey mixed-use development for the waterfront in Etobicoke, and two projects for his sons—a new single-family lakefront residence in Sudbury and a live-work renovation in Toronto.

Allan’s work has been recognized over the years and has received the Credit Foncier Restoration Award, the Governor General’s Award, The Ontario Masonry Council Award of Merit, the Scarborough Urban Design Award, Markham’s Environmental and Urban Design Award, the Toronto Masonry Design Award and the North York Urban Design Award.

He loves to cook, enjoys playing golf, and travels when he can to visit his bucket-list of architectural treasures.
